We have noted the disturbances that took place at Kasoa in the Central Region on Monday 20th July 2020 which disrupted the voter registration exercise at the registration center close to the scene of the incident.

We have noted the concerns raised by the Electoral Commission in a statement issued on Monday 20th July, 2020 in condemning the gunshots and the resultant disruptions that occurred at the registration center.

We have also noted a subsequent interview aired on Adom FM, an Accra-based radio station which is alleged to contain the voice of the Hon. Member of Parliament for the area who doubles as Minister for Special Development Initiatives, Mavis Hawa Koomson, in which she admits to firing the gunshots in self-defense.

We are also concerned about the increasing tension being generated over the past days since the voter registration exercise began which has led to an innocent citizen losing his life.

We are by this release calling on the security agencies of the state to rise to their duties without favor or biases to investigate the matter while ensuring that any potential threats to the peace of Ghana before, during, and after the elections are dealt with without further delay.

We also wish to call on the president of the Republic, His Excellency Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo, to, as a matter of commitment to the sustenance of peace, release the Hon. Minister for Special Development Initiatives from her current position, while urging Parliament and the Office of the Speaker, to ensure that the Member, Mavis Hawa Koomson, avails herself to account to the public in a matter that is of paramount interest.

We caution the general public and especially political actors to be mindful of utterances, actions and inactions that have the potential of degenerating into chaos.

Our country requires a lot more from each and every citizen if we must keep and continue to enjoy our democracy and peace.

Elections must be seen to be a normal exercise in our quest for development, and the electorates must be allowed that free-will to make choices that reflect their joint commitment towards developing Ghana.
