The University Relations Officer (URO) of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has chided the student leaders for Monday’s violent protests.

According to Kwame Yeboah, the concerns the students had raised were brought to the attention of university authorities and discussions were ongoing as to the way forward.

They were then surprised that the students had decided to embark on demonstration, he told Daniel Dadzie on the Super Morning Show on Joy FM, Tuesday.

According to him, the student leaders met with the university authorities on Saturday following some alleged brutality meted to students by campus security on Friday.

The students were reported to be readying for a customary march when the security descended on them because according to the students the march has lost favour with the university authorities.

The URO however, disputed this claim saying that the university has not banned the march as being claimed by the students. “There was a security concern,” he explainedas to why the particular march was prevented.

However, the student leadership has denied ever meeting with the university authorities as claimed.

Public Relations Officer of the Students Representative Council, Maxwell Danquah said after the Friday incident, their only meeting with the university authorities was to notify them of the impending demonstration.

He added that the SRC President is expected to join university authorities in a meeting with the Education Minister later Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei Mensah, has, however, stated that all students including their leaders should vacate the campus as the school has been shut down.

The URO said the university will do everything in their power to ensure the students depart peacefully and none of them is subject to inconvenience.
