Premier League club Arsenal have joined the race to sign versatile Bayer Leverkusen defender Jeremie Frimpong, German newspaper Bild reports.
After failing to win the Premier League title last season, the Gunners are looking to strengthen their squad to progress in the competition and the UEFA Champions League. However, they are expected to face fellow Premier League rivals Manchester United and Champions League semifinalists AC Milan.
Frimpong, who has played for Celtic since joining Bayer Leverkusen, made an immediate impression and played a key role in Bayern Leverkusen’s recent seasons in the German Bundesliga and European competitions.
The Ghana-born Dutchman scored eight goals and seven assists at right-back in the Bundesliga last season. He ended the season with a perfect tally of 20 goals in all competitions.
Mikel Arteta would like to return to Arsenal in Frimpong’s service. According to Bild, the Arsenal may pursue Frimpong after completing the acquisitions of Jurrien Timber and Declan Rice.
