Youth have a significant role to play in demanding accountability from duty bearers. As such they have been encouraged to use social media more profitably to monitor activities of duty bearers, gather data, demand results from duty bearers.
Speaking to sokynewsgh.com on the sidelines of International Youth Day celebration held at Kwamoso in the Eastern Region, Joyce Larnyoh Country Director for International Child Development said Goal 12 of the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals empowers the youth to use Social Media efficiently.
This she says will (even) help them stay out of social vices such drugs abuse, teenage pregnancy, petty thievery, child prostitution among others.
Ms. Larnyoh used the opportunity to against child sexual exploitation, parental neglect, early child marriages among others.
Speaking at the program which was held under the theme; “Creating a violence free Environement for the Youth to Harness their Potential”, Joshua Nartey Ambassador for Youth Advocacy For Girls in the Eastern Region said though it is a known fact that young People are the pillars to the world’s development, they are confronted with a lot of problems in the society.
He spoke about drug abuse among the youth, teenage pregnancy, lack of involvement of young people in decision making, gender inequality, discrimination among people living with disabilities among other barrage of challenges that young people are involved in.
Joshua Nartey however expressed hope that “the foregoing problems will be taken into consideration and an immediate measure will be put in place to address them.”
