The Vice President of Ghana, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, on 10th May 2018 made an announcement that Ghana will soon become one of the Paypal-compliant countries soon.

He made this announcement at the launch ceremony for the first phase of the first mobile money payment interoperability system in Ghana in Accra.

Dr. Bawumia said, “Ghana has concluded discussions with renowned online payments system, PayPal, and Ghana will therefore, if all goes well, become one of the PayPal-compliant countries in two phases.”

He further stated that according to the road map presented by PayPal, by the second half of 2019, Ghanaian merchants should be able to receive payments for their goods online. By the first half of 2020 Ghanaian consumers would be able to make payments for goods and services purchased online via PayPal accounts.

PayPal is a renowned online payments system that supports online money transfers. Making Ghana a PayPal-compliant country would create an opportunity for easy international trade.

Some Ghanaians who need to make and or receive international transactions have found ways of creating accounts using details of other countries.

Recently, PayPal updated their policy agreement and have made it quite problematic for individuals to use the system in areas that haven’t been registered for the service like Ghana. Accounts created by some Ghanaians previously, have been blocked.

It is so pathetic because most people may have some funds in their accounts and can not withdraw because of the recent updates.

We are currently in the second half of 2020 and the online payments system is still not allowed in Ghana. No information have been given by the government explaining the delay.

The Ghanaian people need some explanations from the government.

Sokynewsgh has therefore taken it up to reach out to the government to revisit, if forgotten, and speed up the process of making Ghana a PayPal-compliant country.
